Douglas Moffat Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 16, 2022.
Douglas James Moffat was born on June 6, 1952 in North Charleroi, Pennsylvania and raised in Sag Harbor, New York and Meriden and Newington, Connecticut. As an avid mountain climber and skier, he was drawn to Utah in 1976. He graduated from the University of Utah where he met Diane Aposhian, who would become his wife in 1978.

A natural mechanic and creative problem solver, Doug owned and operated the Highlander Bike Shop (3333 Highland Drive) for over 43 years. Whether on road, mountain, or fat tires, Doug loved cycling. We think he invented the mountain bike but he never got credit for it! He may have also invented the snowboard though he was a skier through and through. He loved living where he could set down fresh tracks in the powder and golf 18 holes in the same blue-sky day. If you've ever lost a golf ball at Nibley Park, he probably found it.

Doug was a fierce competitor in every sport and every game. Whether competing against his wife, his friends, his nieces and nephews, his children, their friends, or his own grandchildren, there was nothing he enjoyed more than defeating them at any contest. If there was fun to be had, he was having it! Doug loved his annual tradition of setting up G-scale model trains and villages at Christmastime then inviting neighbors and friends to visit his ever-growing and changing display. Check it out on YouTube at Moffat Christmas Trains.

Doug was lead guitarist of the band Crash Pontiac & the Hubcaps. His bluesy style was his own. He had music in his soul. He could name all the trees and wildflowers. He loved to whistle and he could imitate all types of birdsong. Just like Tom Sawyer, "He strode down the street with his mouth full of harmony and his soul full of gratitude."

Doug chose to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities, often working with the youth. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Bishop of the Wandamere Ward. He loved this calling.

Doug also served for 12 years on the City Council of South Salt Lake. He was honored with the 2022 Citizen of the Year Award for his service to our community.

Doug experienced many high adventures, defying death several times; now, he is on to his next one. We believe he was greeted by his parents (Robert and Jane Moffat), his in-laws (George and Julie Aposhian), his son (Abraham), his great- nephew (Carson), and his great-great niece (Gwendolyn). Doug is survived by his wife (Diane) and their children Moby (Jenny) Moffat, Max (Kati) Moffat, Melissa (Kaelin) Osmun, and Mattie Moffat, his grand-children (Julia, Jack, Ben and Millie Moffat), as well as his siblings Rob (Sue) Moffat, Ellen (Fred) Casioppo, Karen (Kurt) Winkler, Mary (Jim) Ford, and step-mother Jo Moffat.

We wish to thank Dr. Jenny Bell and all of Doug's doctors, nurses and staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, University Hospital, and Nielsen Rehabilitation Hospital for their care and kindness. Doug loved everyone and was loved by everyone.

Visitations will be held at the Wandamere Ward building (300 east 2700 south) on Wednesday, July 20th from 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday, July 21st at 10 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the same location.

Diane, I am so sorry to hear about Doug. What a great guy, and I owe my LOVE of cycling to Doug. I still ride a lot and tonight my ride will be with his memory. I still have a Bridgestone MB2 that I bought from him. My love to you and the kids. GW

I am sorry to hear of Doug's passing. I remember him from our days at Newington High. I can see that he continued to make his mark as he moved west. Thinking of you all during this time.

Doug and I were in high school together in Newington CT. He and his sister Karin were about the nicest people you could know. The kids in town that skied all hung out together and made frequent trips to areas in VT and NH. One summer we all started rock climbing at the local crag called Ragged Mountain. Doug's wiry frame made him perfectly suited for the sport. He was the first person to dare take a lead and he made it look easy. The lure of Utah took us all out West and Doug took root in SLC along with my brother Les and a number of others. Doug and I spoke about a month ago. He was really happy with the route he took in life. He was a positive influence on others and was still lucky to be able to ski and bike at a high level up until the end...no broken hip, knees still good, his back was a little crooked but still up to the task. He said Diane was the best thing that happened to him. I will miss him.

Just now learned of Doug's passing. A wonderful man. I bought about 10 bikes from him for myself and my boys. He will be missed. Grateful to hear of his joining the LDS Church and being a Bishop. A perfect fit.

Doug´s welcoming , kind and generous nature. His humour, fun and adventurous spirit. All these qualities were evident on the occasions when I visited over the years and when Doug and Diane spent some wonderful time with me and my family in Australia. You will both be forever loved and admired. A cherished friendship indeed!

Oh, the lives Doug has blessed. He will always be considered a dear friend. There are too many fun band memories to ever count! What a great guitarist and overall great man. Always ready with a funny story (I mean, who drives home with a live chicken on their spare tire!). Someone always there to lend a helping hand, and a magician with the trains! Moffats, I am sure you will find a way to keep the tradition going. Much love to you all.

We are saddened to hear Doug has lost his battle with cancer. He was the best of men, he made those around him and the circumstances better by his presence. Our association on the city council developed into a treasured friendship. Any time spent in his company was always uplifting and positive. No matter how you played, a round on the golf course with Doug was always enjoyable. Like the music with his bandmates of Crash Pontiac, he brightened your heart. Cherish the memories until you can be reunited with him, Diane. Our love and prayers are with you.

Love,

I Remember the first time we met Doug it was at his first band practice with Crash Pontiac and we were all amazed at his guitar skills. He could play any song we named and it was so fun to get to know him singing together in the early 90´s. We also got to see his trains at Christmas and partake of his technical bicycling knowledge when planning a Moab biking excursion for the scouts. He was an amazing man and we send our deepest sympathies and know he will be greatly missed.

He was a great scout leader for our boys. They loved and appreciated all he did for them. Our ward has a tremendous loss without him. Love and kindness were the hallmarks of his life. His musical skill was amazing. He will be missed.

It seems life was quite short for this great man, though he did make t to age 70. I sure thought a lot of him, such a friendly and easy person to talk to. One of my first fun memories of working with him was in the early 1990s the ward had a calling to go to the young Women's camp and cut up dead trees to stack up for the girls for wood to burn for camp fires. He and I and Glen Cox and my son volunteered to do this. We spend most of the day on this and we really enjoyed working together doing this. I remember to in the 1980 and 90's the church had a book of Mormon donation program in which we would include a picture of our family and a testimony to share that was inserted in the Book of Mormon. I was in charge of this for our ward and Doug and Diane donated hundreds of books and testimonies that were delivered throughout the world. I'm sure he was a great help to bringing many souls into the church and he is probably busy doing great things in Heaven now.
How we enjoyed listening to their songs and performing with the group Crash Pontiac and the Hub caps, at so many 4th of July and other celebrations. I Sure will miss this man.

I remember a 400 mile bike ride that Doug, myself, and two other crazies took a while back. I took a spill and slide down the muddy road toward the edge of the road and onto a drop off. Luckily I stopped at the edge of the road with only my pride hurt and road rash on my right hip. We ended the trip at the Manti Temple and watched the Manti Pagent. It was such a great trip! Doug was always there for anyone who needed help. I loved him and I'll miss him. I thank the Lord for all the great memories of bike rides, and golf and the challenges he always gave those around him. Thank you Diane for sharing him with us!

To my dear Moffat friends, this hurts my heart. How does one say goodbye to such a dear friend? I know Katie rejoiced when she saw him again... I´ll hold onto that. My love to you all.
