Michael Gustafson Obituary

Michael Gustafson

October 27, 1942 - December 2, 2025

Michael Theodore "Mike" Gustafson, 83, of Billings, Montana, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born October 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, Mike was the son of Reverend Carl Theodore "Ted" Gustafson and Jean Louise Gustafson. From an early age, he learned the values that would guide his life: faith, service, and a belief in the power of education to change lives.

Mike lived with purpose and intention. After earning his law degree from the University of Denver, he built a career defined by leadership, vision, and generosity, ultimately founding and serving as CEO of Wesco Resources. A businessman at heart, Mike took great pride in his work and the relationships he formed along the way. He was known for his determination, his thoughtful problem-solving, and his unwavering belief that no idea should be abandoned before every possibility was explored. As he often said, "no stone is left unturned."

Beyond his professional achievements, Mike was deeply committed to giving back. A lifelong advocate for education, he believed access to learning opened doors of opportunity for individuals and communities alike. His philanthropy supported numerous institutions and students through scholarships, including the University of Denver College of Law, Rocky Mountain College in Billings, and the nursing and medical programs at Carroll College.

On December 29, 1964, Mike married Charlene Ann (Hanson) Gustafson. Together they raised three children, Kirk Michael Gustafson, Kerri Jean Wilkins, and Jennifer Ann Beck, instilling in them a passion for learning, personal growth, and perseverance.

Those who knew Mike will remember his sharp intellect, his ability to bring people together, and his generous spirit. He had a gift for seeing potential, in people, in ideas, and in the future, and worked tirelessly to transform vision into results. His impact is reflected in the lives he touched, the opportunities he created, and the many students whose paths were forever changed through his generosity.

Mike is survived by his wife, Charlene; his children, Kirk, Kerri (Darren), and Jennifer (Landon); and his grandchildren, Kayla Marie Gustafson, Cody Frank Wilkins, and Ryan Michael Wilkins. He is also survived by his sisters, Karen Whitmer and Theresa (Charles) Grenier. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Paul Gustafson; and his brother-in-law, Ken Whitmer. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A service will be held in Billings at Mayflower Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Rocky Mountain College or the University of Denver College of Law, continuing Mike's lifelong commitment to education.

"Education opens the doors of possibility, and through those doors, we honor his memory."

Services will held on Saturday, March 28th, at 3 p.m., at Mayflower Church. To leave condolences, please visit www.MichelottiSawyers.com.
