No finer servant of the game. Welcomed me as part of the third grade team when I was just eleven and ensured I was always picked even though I was definitely not the strongest link. He always made sure I bowled the last over. Part of a team of fine and principled men who taught me a lot about the game and its honour. I delivered his paper too! Condolences to the family.

So many great achievements from a man ever-so-humble. During the 1970's Vern captained a lower grade cricket team for Kia Toa when I was with Palmerston as opposing skipper.Just a wonderful advertisement for the game; with his battered blue cap, cheery smile and unwavering sportsmanship.
Vern, you worked so hard for your community and deserved all the accolades you received. It was a real pleasure to unexpectedly meet with you a couple of years ago, after a 40 year gap, and share some of our cricket memories.
Family can be so proud of this man.

Dear Joan.
It must have been a sixth sense that made me Google for an email address, only to find the news of Vern's death. Please accept my heart felt condolences. I have certainly cherished happy memories and feelings of everlasting friendship. It was indeed a privilege to have known him. May his memory be eternal!

I knew Vern through Netball. he will be sadly missed. I had great respect and admiration for him whilst he was the netball manawatu patron. My sympathies go out to his family in this tough time.

We were saddened to hear of Vern's passing. I fondly remember the help and inspiration that Vern passed to myself and my colleague Roger Crothswaite when we were setting up the School of Aviation at Massey University. Being new to the intricacies of working with academia, Vern was our savior. We will not forget you Vern.

Dear Joan & family. I was very saddened to hear about Vern. He was a great community man so giving of his time and knowledge. I will treasure the time we spent together as fellow trustees of Heritage Park Rhododendron Garden at Kimbolton. Vern was always knowledgeable, forward thinking and had a lovely joyful spirit. We very much valued his input. May I offer my deepest sympathy to you all and apologise that I am unable to make the service.
