Thomas Gilmer Obituary
Thomas J. Gilmer, of Belle Vernon, died Saturday, March 25, 2006, in Jefferson Hospital. Born in Webster, March 12, 1918, to Thomas J. and Myrtle Gilmer. He earned a degree from California State Teachers College and a graduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He was the superintendent of the Belle Vernon Area School District for 22 years. He headed the March of Dimes and United Way campaigns during that time. He was in the egg business at one time, raising 15,000 chickens. He enjoyed building and gardening and built a shopping plaza at the current site of 422 Home Sales. On Sept. 30, 1976, he married Carol Shaw, who survives. He is also survived by children, Thomas and Joy; grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Acheson. A sister, Viola Johnston, is deceased. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
