I first met Peter when I arrived as a new Massey staff member in 1973. He was Director of the Diploma of Agriculture to which I was assigned to teach Animal Nutrition and Dairy Production. The students were an interesting bunch - mainly off-farm and at Massey for a year, where academic pursuits were only a small part of their experience. Taking them on Field Trips for a week away presented Peter with a challenge, which he handled with tact, but was strict when necessary. I remember us staying at the Tauherenikau jockey's quarters and Peter buttering bread for the evening meal - more butter than bread - he did like his food!
He kept in touch with most of his former students, and it was reckoned he could find a bed anywhere in the country.
Peter was a legendary educator and his like is unlikely to be seen again, as the University has changed radically since his day. I can't see him taking to on-line teaching!
It was pleasure to know Peter and he will be sorely missed.
I found a photo in the Massey archives of Peter in his early Massey days, which I have included.
