Floyd Shaw Obituary

Floyd Leigh Shaw, 95 of Parma, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at his residence in Parma.


Floyd, son of David Sr. and Cecil Lambert Shaw, was born on Friday, May 17, 1929 in Parma, Missouri.


Floyd graduated from Parma High School in 1949, received his BSE in Elementary Education from Arkansas State University, his Masters in Guidance and Counseling from University of Mississippi, and his Specialist in Guidance and Counseling and Elementary Administration from Southeast Missouri State University. 


Floyd grew up working in the family’s garage and Standard Gas Station in Parma. He began his career in education at Maple Grove Elementary after leaving the Navy. Floyd taught and coached at Parma, Risco, and Howardville. He was Elementary Principal at Clarkson and K-3 Principal and Counselor at Jackson, Missouri. He finished out his career in the New Madrid County R-1 School District working as the K-12 Guidance Counselor at Parma and, after Parma High School closed, as the Disadvantaged and Handicapped Counselor and Coordinator for Vocational Placement at the New Madrid County R-I Vocational/Technical Skills Center.


Floyd was very civic minded and served as an alderman and Mayor of Parma. He was also a Scout Master and Little League Baseball and Basketball Coach. He was one of the founding members of the Ambulance Service in Parma serving almost 30 years as an EMT. He was also a member of the Parma United Methodist Church since he was 17 and was the oldest surviving member of the church when is closed. He loved spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, and playing pool.


On October 19, 1959, he was united in marriage to Shirley Myrick. She survives. 


His other survivors include, daughter, Rhonda Gist and husband, Tony of New Madrid; son, Jerry Shaw and wife, Toshia of Parma; three granddaughters, Jessica Gist and Fiancé, Chase Smith of Kennett, Brittany Gist Coats and husband, Jeremy of Jonesboro, Arkansas and Taylor Shaw of Parma; five great-grandchildren, Evie Coats, Bryant Coats, Talan Smith, Dax Causey and Ethan Causey; brother, Mike Shaw and wife, Anita of Malden and many nieces and nephews. 


He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Burl Shaw, Bob Shaw and David Shaw, Jr. and sister, Hazel Shaw Townsend.


Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the Landess Funeral Chapel in Malden, Missouri, with funeral service beginning at 12 p.m., with Reverend Scott McQuay officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood 1st Addition Cemetery in Malden.


Landess Funeral Home and Crematory in Malden are in charge of the arrangements.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's been many years since I last saw Uncle Floyd, but I do remember spending time with him and Uncle David in Parma. My father was Preston Shaw of Portageville and my grandfather was Ruben Shaw of Hickory Ridge, AR.
