Neil was a mentor to many including me. He set the bar for the highest standards of professionalism and personal ethics. Whilst it was terrifying to be the student his piercing gaze landed upon at discussion time, it only drove us to be better. He played a big part in my earning a doctorate and I am only one of many in the veterinary profession who owe him much. Thanks Neil - and my great sympathy and thanks to your family for sharing you with us all.

I knew Neil when I was a school & venturer scouting friend of Robert. I spent a lot of time at their College Street house. Mum & Dad (June & Gordon Campbell) became friends of Neil & Betsy and enjoyed visiting them and their garden in Otaki. Reading of Neil´s passing bought back very good memories of our two families friendship.

A great mentor in many ways, and unforgettable. He has had a positive lifelong effect on me. Condolences from Ron.

My condolences to Betsy and the family. Neil was one of my great mentors, and my only regret is that I have not visited recently. He took me under his wing in 1986 and instilled a sense of rolling up your sleeves and finding the answer. He was always enthusiastic and lead by example. A great man. Prof Bruce Allworth

Dear Betsy and family.
My thoughts are with you all on the sad loss of Neil.
When I entered vet school in 1969 Neil remembered me from the early 60s as a young teenager on my uncle's farm on Glenmark Drive Waipara where he came to a cow with milk fever and a horse with a discharging foreign body abscess for which he gave me care instructions. He supported me enormously as a student, treating me with respect and dignity, as he did all students. He was a highly respected and revered teacher among the all his students.
It was Neil who encouraged me to do a PhD and when nearing completion he created a new farm animal lectureship position and enticed me into it. He recognised that deer farming might have a future in NZ and require veterinary expertise, He encouraged and supported me to develop a career pathway in deer, giving me a globally unique opportunity to develop expertise in a internationally new farmed species. He then supported me to establish a deer research and teaching unit at Massey. During his time as HoD he frequently mentored me professionally, not only as a boss but as a friend. He once told me that the key attribute for a departmental head was to appoint the right people, and give them the opportunity to achieve. With a smile on his face, he then said that the better his staff achieve, the better would be his and the department's reputation: the mark of a great man with a true understanding of leadership. That was the type of person Neil was. I count myself extremely fortunate to have had Neil as a colleague, mentor and supporter of my early career. He contributed so much to who I became as an academic, and for the satisfaction I gained from my veterinary career. For this I have been and will remain eternally grateful.

Sympathies to Stuart and the rest of the family. Prof. Neil Bruere was a legend. A recognized pioneer of herd and flock medicine, he was one of our most intelligent and intimidating professors at Massey - his standards were high and his goal was to help us be the very best veterinarians we could be. He was an important role model for me. Professionalism was so important to him: he often despaired of us long-haired scruffy students of the 70´s! Respect.
