Milton PEDLEY Obituary

PEDLEY, Milton Charles:
Formerly of Tokomaru. Passed away peacefully on Tuesday 31 January 2023, aged 88 years. Dearly loved husband of Jean. Loved father and father-in-law of Erin and Kevin Parr, and Jillian and Dave Jonasen. Loved and treasured Grandfather of Darryl, Brad & Amanda. All messages to the Pedley family, C/- 6 Vivian Street, Palmerston North. In accordance with Milton's wishes, a private cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life, in accordance with his wishes, will be held at a later date.

I am so very sorry to hear about Milton's passing. He often crops up in my thoughts and wonder how he's getting on. I knew Milton to be a funny, generous and gregarious man with a deep sense of honour and fairness. My thoughts are with Jean and the rest of Milton's family. I still cannot believe that the last time I saw him was my last.

My bleated condolences to Jean and the Pedley family. Milton became very good friends to my late father Derek through Lodge and my mother Rose as a fellow Horowhenua Councillor. In later years I too counted Milton as a close friend and well remember the warm cheerful greetings you always gave. I last saw Milton and Jean in late November 2022 before I left for the UK. I was deeply saddened when I learned of your passing in early 2024. It was thanks to you Milton that I brought several Mercedes cars and joined the local Manawatu Mercedes Club. I always enjoyed our many chats and coffees we had discussing local government issues, Mercedes cars etc...

I am very sad to hear of Milton passing. I only met him last year when he came to Hokowhitu School to look at some archives for him and his sister. Milton was so lovely and talked away as I showed him around the school and he explained to me how it had changed. He had some fantastic stories. I have thought of him often since our encounter. My thoughts are with Milton's family.

Milton grew up on a farm just down the road from my family at Tokomaru. Being similar age to my older brothers he was often roped into their interests and activities. Cycle racing, boat racing on the Manawatu river, the band - for instance. Milton, his sister and parents were held in high regard by my family during those years. My condolences to Milton´s family.

When I first met Milton at the Coach House Museum he told me the story of how he stayed with my father's family on their farm as a child. It was great to meet someone who knew my father that long ago. Such a friendly person, Milton will be missed.

I came to know Milton and Jean soon after the publication of a 2019 book in New Zealand. In the short time that I knew Milton, he impressed me with his tenacity, doggedness, honesty, and passion for what he believed was right. My contact with Milton was mostly by telephone and email with several Zoom sessions. Unfortunately, I was not able to travel to New Zealand in 2020 or 2021 to meet him in person due to circumstances beyond our control. Having a conversation with Milton was an occasion because of his cheerfulness and positivity. What became clear was his wholehearted commitment to life and all its possibilities, and he has certainly crammed a lot into a life well lived. Milton was a tonic to the spirit and I for one took it in full measure. Rest in peace Milton and thank you for the memories.

To Mrs Pedley and Family
Please accept my sincere condolences. I knew Milton for many years in my role as a Valuer and Real Estate Agent, and for the last 6 years as Deputy Mayor. We had many good discussions over this time. We agreed on many things and could respectfully disagree on a few other things. Milton was always thoughtful, polite and presented his case in a considered manner. He was a character who we all liked and respected for speaking out on matters he believed were important. He did a lot over many years for our community.

Milton was one of a kind. He fought for the underdog. He could do just about anything, played just about anything and knew just about everybody. He and Jean were our immediate neighbours in Tokomaru and our family had a long association with them. He will be missed by so many.

Milton will be remembered for his telling of story or two, as well as his delightful sense of humor. Milton was a member of the formerly Manawatu Savage Club now OnStage for 40 years .
