Deepest sympathy to Lois and the family in the sad loss of Gavin, known to us as Spike. Good memories of us all in the Country and Rock n Roll group in Kaikoura. Also my son Johnny never forgot the time he was taken up the Clarence White Water rafting by Spike, especially being collected in the Police Car. RIP

Dear Lis and family. I had hoped to attend Spike's Memorial, but my wife Pam's health is not 100% and can't travel. I, like Spike, was a frontline policeman worked with Spike in Blenheim for about 4-5 years on the frontline. With a navy background, Spike was always immaculately dressed in uniform and in appearance. He was a proud man, and didn't suffer fools or criminals. Although we worked on different Sections, occasionally Spike and I worked together and I always enjoyed his company and his way of dealing with trouble-makers' or name-droppers'! One claimed he was a friend of the then current Commissioner of Police. Spike said to him, "the only one who can help you here is Gavin Jones". Who is Gavin Jones he asked? "Me", Spike replied and commenced to put this business executive through the breath/alcohol procedure. Spike was a good man, and I was proud to serve alongside him.
