He was a wonderful `Grandnut´ to his three granddaughters on Stella´s side, and much adored by them for his story telling. John was a crossword wizard, who solved many a daunting puzzle. He is still in our hearts.

I had the greatest respect for my late colleague John Owens, and was privileged to see a bit of him in his years in Auckland. Recently his work has been praised by a scholar at a conference I was at, and his thesis has not been surpassed since he wrote it all those years ago.

My father (Lenorad Allinson) asked me to say that John was his dearest and oldest friend from when they were 8 years old and at school in north London, then at Merton College Oxford together, and throughout life. He will be sorely missed.
The Allinson family are very familiar with John's hand writing and enjoyed reading his frequent letters to Mum and Dad.
It was wonderful for Mum and Dad to spend time with John and Stella when they visited me in New Zealand and to keep in touch with the family via Simon (and the letters) when he was based in the UK.
We lit a special sparkler for him on Bonfire Night.
