Very sad news. My endearing memory of David is as an enthusiast who brought energy and humour to everything he did. His legacy lives on in the staff he mentored. My condolences.

Sad to hear the news of David's passing and my condolences to the family. From my time at NZDRI (and subsequent interactions). I remember the character and bow-ties - and the help he gave me as I navigated my first job out of university.

I was a colleague of Dave´s at NZDRI from 1968 for some 40 years and our paths crossed many times, particularly in regard to his specialist subject of recombining. We both attended the IDF Recombining Seminar held in Alexandria in 1987. It was there that Dave demonstrated the uncanny knack of seemingly sleeping through presentations and then being the first one to ask a pertinent question of the speaker. I recall that he chaired a morning session and had to give a presentation in place of the missing first speaker. Dave only had a a couple of hours to pull the presentation together with little material at hand but he was able to deliver a well judged talk. We travelled to Luxor after the seminar for a weekend of sightseeing and we were both astounded by the tombs in the Valley of the Kings.

Dave subsequently travelled to the Middle East on many occasions: as a key note speaker at the recombining seminars held annually in Bahrain by the Dairy Board and as a troubleshooter for problems at the recombining plants in the region. He became something of an industry oracle with an international reputation.

I´ll remember Dave fondly as a friend and a great colleague.

This is such sad news! My condolences to Leslie and David's family and friends.
David made a significant contribution to the NZ dairy industry, to dairy science, and in particular to protein/mineral chemistry and milk enzymes and to managing the impact of these on dairy systems and products. I really appreciate the support and encouragement David provided to me and so many others as we developed our own careers in dairy science and will always be grateful for this. I do miss our long conversations and debates over the lunch table. David was a true gentleman and supporter of the NZ dairy industry - his legend lives on!

So sorry to hear of David's passing. David was a highly respected staff member at the Fonterra Research and Development Centre and I recall having many interesting conversations with David. What I recall most about David was his dedication to fitness. His regular tramps through the Manawatu Gorge track were an inspiration to us all.
