I met David as a chemistry student and had a desk and a fume hood next to him in the fourth floor grad office and lab for years. He taught me how to do those horrible chromatography columns, but more than that, he taught me how to be in a laboratory, how to share what we discovered, how to always leave things a little better than we found them.
Even in a department full of great people, David stood out as the kindest guy around. So many students have been touched by his gentle, patient guidance and wisdom. It is not a stretch to say that very little of what we did would have been possible without him. He took such joy in helping us, and it is a comfort to remember that the impact he had can never be lost.
My sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones. He will be deeply missed.

As a fellow Massey chemistry technician, I always found David to be thoroughly professional and friendly. Particularly appreciated were his kind words of encouragement a couple of years ago when my job was in danger in the restructure. Gone way too soon. Rest in Peace

I have not seen David for a long while, but will always remember him as a loveable guy with a big heart and a cheeky smile. Always the sensible head, we did our best to lead him into mischief. He would always come along for the ride with his quiet way and big friendly grin.
David the world is a poorer place without you in it, but the genuine care you showed your friends and colleagues lives on in the lives of those you touched.
Deepest sympathies to your family and close friends, from all of us around the globe, aroha nui.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of David Lun. I met David about a year and a half ago during a very challenging stage of my research, when I was struggling with HPLC and felt completely lost. David, with his kindness and patience, guided me through everything. Even though I was not from his department and had to book through him, he always made time to help and to check if things were going smoothly. He spoke little, but his actions and willingness to support others spoke volumes.
David was one of the best people I had the privilege to meet, selfless, approachable, and always willing to help. He has left a lasting impact on my life, and I will always remember his help, his listening ear, and his beautiful smile. He is a great loss to our university, and his presence will be dearly missed.
Rest in peace, David. You will always be remembered.

Dear Family of David,
I was deeply saddened to hear of David´s passing. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.
David was more than a colleague to me, he was a mentor and a great support. He patiently trained me in LC-MS and MS data analysis, always willing to share his knowledge and guide me when I needed help. His punctuality, calm nature, and generous spirit inspired me greatly.
I will always remember his kindness, encouragement, and the smile that brightened even the busiest days. His face and presence remain vivid in my memory, and I will miss him dearly.
May you find comfort in knowing how much he positively touched the lives of those who worked with him.
With deepest sympathy,
Prishanthi

To David´s family,
My sincere condolences on your loss. I am deeply saddened by his passing. Though we didn't work together frequently, David left a lasting impression on me. I remember that our first meeting left me with a distinct impression of someone who genuinely cared for his colleagues, staff, and students, and who had a passion for science and research. His friendliness and warmth were always on display whenever we encountered each other on campus; even when I was asking him to help fill a liquid nitrogen dewar at an inconvenient time, it spoke to his character that he´d always do it with a smile and want to stay and chat. I´ll miss all of that. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

To the Lun Family
I was very saddened to hear of David´s sudden passing. I wanted to share how much I appreciated the kindness and quiet generosity he brought to the university. He was always very helpful and reliable when you needed him. He helped me organise important supplies for some field trials I was struggling with. David was always someone you were simply glad to see around-always smiling, always helpful. I hope it brings some comfort to know that David's presence touched many of us. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
With sympathy, Cade

I first met Dave when he was a postgraduate student at Massey using NMR spectroscopy. He subsequently became my trusted "right-hand man", helping whenever I needed assistance with the NMR spectrometers. He did this with the utmost competence and was always willing to help - even if it meant staying late or coming in at the weekend. I also enjoyed our many chats while we waited for the liquid helium to slowly transfer into the NMR magnets on helium fill day. I will miss him very much.

We were so sad to hear about David's sudden death. We knew him as a colleague at Massey and remember his shy smile, his willingness to help both staff and students and his considerable skills in both chemical syntheses and chemical analyses. He helped our group in many ways over many years, which we greatly appreciated, was always kind and considerate and could always be relied upon. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Mom, Dad, and Sister of David,
I first met David in December 2023, and from that very first day until our last meeting just last month, he was nothing but kind, generous, and warm-hearted. No argument he was truly the friendliest, kindest and most helpful technician I have ever met during my PhD journey. While not a close colleague, he always took time to talk, show an interest in others, and be a genuine colleague. Throughout last year and into this year, he supported me with my experiments in every way he could, never once thinking about his own time-always giving without hesitation.
I still find it hard to believe what has happened to such a beautiful soul. In my mind, I can still see his smile, hear his voice, and remember the kindness he shared with everyone around him. David, I still don´t want to think that you are not with us anymore. you will live on forever in our hearts.
With deepest sympathy and love,
Kaushala Weerasinghe

I was saddened to hear of David's sudden passing. I only met him earlier this year when I visited to see our old pyro-GC/MS instrument, which had been entrusted to his care. In that brief time, I was impressed by his kindness, professionalism, and the way he looked after so many analytical instruments. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry to hear of David´s passing
He was a quiet but valued member of our friend group. We all had a great time together during the summer of 1998 working for the university in summer jobs then flowing on into our masters studies. I recall him as being very private, intelligent and thoughtful with a sneaky humour. He was part of a very fun and formative era of my life. He was and will be forever in my heart
