Clayton Getzelman Obituary

Clayton R. Getzelman, 80, of Momence, passed away peacefully Thursday (March 7, 2024), at Ascension Saint Mary Hospital in Kankakee.He was born Dec. 21, 1943, in Elgin, the son of Robert M. and Adeline M. (Sodman) Getzelman. Clayton married Jill D. Blazier on Nov. 29, 1980, in Elgin. She survives.

In addition to his wife, Jill D. Getzelman, of Momence, surviving are his five childrenm, Jacob (Stephanie) Getzelman, of Britt, Iowa, Amelia Thompson (Kyle Kulseth), of Bozeman, Mont., Alicia (Miguel) Gonzalez, of Momence, Chelsea Bills and Melanie (Tim) Roberts; special daughter, Renata Marino, of Brazil; and nine grandchildren, Mikaela Getzelman, Cedric Thompson, Emery Gonzalez, Elias Gonzalez, Emmett Gonzalez, Evelina Gonzalez, Eileen Gonzalez, Sarah Roberts and Emily Roberts.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and a brother, John M. Getzelman.

He worked as a railroad switch tender operator for the Burlington Railroad and retired from the Indiana Harbor Belt after 45 years.

Clayton served in the U.S. Army as a diesel mechanic from 1966 to 1969 with a tour in Vietnam.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Momence, where he has served as an ordained deacon for many years.

Clayton was an avid rail fan and loved model railroading. He enjoyed gardening and putting puzzles together. A person could find him and his wife, Jill, "deer hunting," as they often drove around the countryside in hopes of spotting deer.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at First Baptist Church in Momence. An additional time for visitation will be from 9 a.m. Thursday, March 14, until the 10 a.m. funeral service, both at First Baptist Church in Momence. The Rev. Tim Filkins will officiate. Interment will be in Union Corners Cemetery, Grant Park.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family, as funds are intended to set up a future memorial fund in Clayton's honor.
