Thinking of Ben and his family today. I had Mr. McCarthy as my teacher in Enthusiastic Eight. He taught me so much about stop-go animation, computers and IT. At 23 yrs old I still have so many fond memories of being in his classroom along with the DVD we made of all our creations throughout the year 2008. I will always be grateful for his support and teaching style, he was an awesome asset to Hokowhitu. I can 100% say my love for art and creation started in his class. There aren't enough words to express how much of a positive impact he had on all of his students.

Mr. McCarthy taught me during the years 2009 and 2010. He was one of best teachers I've ever had. Broke my heart to hear the news. May he rest in peace. He will always be in the hearts of his ex-students and current students.

I had the pleasure of known Ben as a fellow colleague at Hokowhitu School. I have so many great memories including you making a kiln outside Room 7, your fun water aerobics and those cool moves, your hobbit feet shoes, your creative artwork, animation, everything ICT and so much more. You were an inspiration to not only the kids that you taught but also the teachers that had the pleasure of knowing you. You will be greatly missed and there has been a big whole left at Hokowhitu School with your passing. My deepest of sympathies to Miranda, Tyler and Lara and family. RIP Ben.

Met Ben while teaching at Hokowhitu School and I know we all have cool memories of him. He always had something funny to say, mountains of patience with us when we had computer issues and time for everyone he worked with. I am truly sorry for your loss Miranda. My thoughts are with you and your family at this very sad time.

I first met Ben as a student teacher at Hokowhtiu School in 2002. I was very impressed by him and was delighted to be able to appoint him as a beginning teacher a couple of years later. What an excellent decision that was. His death is a tragic loss to education, to his family, and to the world - such a lovely person.

Ever since I heard the tragic news of Ben passing away, his smiling face has been constantly on my mind.
I met Ben when I was teaching at Hokowhitu school. He instantly became my role model, as the kids adored him and he was always doing the coolest thing in his class. He was such the individual and so passionate about what he did.
I will honour you by endeavouring to be the best teacher I can be.
Rest in peace.

Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us everyday unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, still near and very dear. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, loves leaves a memory no one can steal.
