Evelyn
We are shocked & saddened to learn of Tony's passing.
Jenny & I have fond
memories of our early years
in Taupo with Tony & yourself.
Especially the orienteering
events and the social club challenges between Taupo
County &Taupo Borough which Tony & I both organised.
I have still have a vivid memory of Tony racing across the Tauhara farmlands in the inaugural All Night Orienteering Relays. Tony was being chased hard for first place on the last leg. He won.

My condolences Evelyn, Sharron and Michael on hearing the sad news of Tony's passing. What a generous, fun, active and inspiring guy he was. I have such warm friendly feelings whenever I think of him even though it's been a long time since we last met.
Tony was very influential in my life in a very positive way. First through his support of my parents in the organisation of the Taupo Orienteering Club and later when his sporting interest switched to Triathlon. Through Tony I developed my love of Triathlon not only as a sport but as a healthy lifestyle in which I still continue to this day.
I can still remember watching Tony exit the Taupo Triathlon swim in a leading position in his revolutionary fawn coloured wetsuit and leap onto his bike and tear off Triathlon was new and exciting I had to give it a go also. But I was so jealous of Tony's strong swim, when I later competed against him had to develop a strong bike and run just to pull him back and that's still how I race.
Tony also might not have realised his influence on world triathlon since those early Taupo Triathlon days.
First Tony's organisational ability and success within the Triathlon Club is one of the reasons IronmanNZ had confidence to move the event from Auckland to Taupo where it is acknowledge as one of the iconic Ironman races in the world and why the World Half Ironman is to be raced there this December.
The second notable influence Tony may not have been aware of is that in Taupo he introduced a young visiting British orienteer called Jack Maitland to Triathlon. I think Jack surprised himself finishing on the podium at the Taupo triathlon and this changed his sporting focus on returning to britain. Not only did Jack go on to be a world class amateur triathlete but developed into a high performance coach in British Triathlon. Jack coached both Alistair and Jonathon Brownlee to multiple Olympic Gold Medals over multiple years.
Well it's 35 years later and through Tonys influence in getting me into multisport I have raced in ITU age group world Champs, Xterra World Champs, podiumed as an age grouper in Coast to Coast and finally qualified to race at the Hawaiian Ironman next month. So when I start the swim in Kona I will think back to Friday evening lake swims in Taupo with Tony and visualise trying to beat that fast old guy.
Thanks Tony.
Take a well earned rest.

Evelyn, we are so sorry to hear of Tony´s passing and pass on our condolences to you and family.
Tony was an integral member of the initial Central Zone of Fulton Hogan and manager of the Wanganui Region and previously the Taupo branch. Tony is remembered by his Zone colleagues as an integral part of the team and a contributor to the fun times we had at various meetings while undertaking the hard work.

We got to know Tony in Palmy through the golf club a few years ago and found him great company with a matter of fact approach to every day life. It was always fun chatting with Tony and Evelyn at dinner, sharing our joint interests of travel and golf with the occasional anecdote about workplaces. Tony´s determination to achieve his own standards were a great example to us all.

We´re so sad to hear of Tony´s passing and offer Evelyn and all their family our deepest sympathy.
